Backing up in fifth grade math

Today’s math lesson focused on Greatest Common Factors. A few minutes into our lesson, we had to slam on the breaks and back up three steps to the foundational knowledge the kids needed in order to make sense of the learning target for today. In time, our students had the information they needed to go forward. However if we had failed to back up, they would still be left in the dust.

When do you have to back up in order to move forward?
