The queen of card games was dethroned for the night. For the first time, my wife met a game she didn’t get. Inevitably her turn would be met with “um..can I ???” Although she stuck with the game, she didn’t look like she was enjoying it very much.
For many students with exceptional needs, being confused and overwhelmed with a given task is par for the course. They don’t often enjoy school…it is an effort full struggle with many questions and few “wins”.
It was the juxtaposition of “queen of cards” and struggling student within one person that highlighted the dramatic distance between the two states of being. So often, we take for granted our expertise or deficit. Experiencing role reversal helps us develop compassion in ways that a mere observer would never encounter.
