“Sleep Training” has been going blessedly well for the past couple of weeks. They babies cried most of the first night but since then have been able to fall back to sleep with reminder of the pacifier and blanket. Tonight, Dowan’s cry is a guttural scream of agony, his hand, halfway down his throat with what seems to be teething pain. So instead of following the sleep training rule of pacifier and blanket, we’ve made an exception. Tylenol, ice cubes, snuggles and teething gel, he is finally settling down.
Whether it is an unscripted response to a student or colleague in crisis, or a particularly uninspired meal of leftover cookies, we have all found moments where a different course of action is the completely appropriate exception to the rule.
