Crossing paths

We stopped for gas on our way home from Philly today. As I was roaming around the rest stop with the kids, I spotted a license plate that said, “the pact”. The owner of the car was present and I couldn’t help but ask what her license plate meant. She explained that she was the author of a system for adapting curriculum for exceptional learners in inclusive environments. I shared that I was an inclusive special education teacher in Ithaca, New York. We both gave each other a knowing smile then she reached into her Volvo and pulled out her business card and a complimentary copy of her book and DVD. Soon after that, Laura said we were ready to hit the road, so we exchanged well wishes and departed.

I spent the rest of the ride home reading her book “The Power of T.H.E. P.A.C.T.” Although it was published pre-iPad and Proloquo2go, it still offers a very relevant framework for thinking and learning about the use of assistive technology in support of exceptional students. It is exciting to cross paths with someone doing similar work and learn new skills from her perspective.

When have you crossed paths with someone who has influenced you in a lasting way?
