Today the fifth graders went to the middle school for a visit. Hung out with one of our students with autism who is functionally non verbal. I did my best to try and help him translate all of the new information coming at him from a thousand new directions. What I realized was that every new interaction, new room, new sound, was an opportunity for this kid to be developing a new coping mechanism. We were both fried by the end of the day however, we had new knowledge to show for it.
When was the last time you did something overwhelmingly new? How did that experience teach you something new?
