Engagement vs. investment

My student teacher asked a student to put the homework in class mailboxes. The student responded, “That is a boring, menial task and I am not getting paid so I am not going to do it.”
My student teacher did the right thing by making sure he followed through with the task regardless of his desire however, it made me think: How do we make sure we are helping kids learn in engaging ways while also helping them invest in their communities/families …even when the task at hand is less than desirable?
